If you are into American Football, I’m sure you know about offensive lines and defensive lines. Imagine that you are an NFL quarterback. You weigh 160 lbs. and are 5’11”. Your offensive line (O-line) is made up of guys that are 6’2″ and under.

The dreaded “B” Word – Budget. If you were to conduct a poll and asked people if they had a budget, the majority would say they do not. People are very reticent to make a budget, so much so that new names are now in place to replace the dread associated with the word budget

Before we start trying to get of debt, we must first, establish our foundation. We need to make God our foundation. Matthew 7:24-27 tells us to build our house on the rock. The rock is God. When we have Him as our foundation, we can withstand storms. In our case, a solid foundation about money will help us weather financial storms.

Secondly, we need to change our way of thinking. We currently say, “my home, my family, my job, my savings, etc”. However, we don’t own anything.

If you are not debt-free, you are not ready for investing for retirement. You need to follow the steps previously discussed before you can began to invest for retirement. This is step number five of your essential steps.

The previous steps were:

  1. The Foundation
  2. Quick Fund
  3. Payoff your debt
  4. Fully-funded Emergency Fund

Now, you are on step five – Investing for your retirement.
